Curious – Sober October?

A few folks have asked me about swapping to alcohol-free over this year.

There are lots of different angles to the questions – a bit about me, both now and before, and a bit about the process – the ups and the downs.

  • Is it hard?
  • How are you feeling?
  • How’s the sleep?
  • Was there a rock bottom or trigger for change?
  • Would you encourage it?
  • Have you lost weight?
  • How is sport now?
  • How long has it been?
  • Why?
  • How do you deal with scenarios x,y, and z?

As with any behaviour change, particularly one that is still a bit less than mainstream there can be quite a bit of interest. Always happy to chat 1-2-1 if folks want to go into more details.

The coaching process is inherently about a form of change.

It is usually a behaviour one, that introduces the stimulus for the body to react and adapt to the change.

In sports, this is often going further or going faster.

Usually, the hardest part is the mental decision to establish the new change. For me, the goal is to focus on the positive element of the change you are introducing. It becomes integrated and normalised quickly.

To short-cut all of the replies about my personal experiences going alcohol-free why not give it a try yourself?

Sober October is a popular time to have a bit of an experiment and see if it might or might not be for you.

Lots of charities leverage it for raising funds as well. For example https://www.gosober.org.uk/

Action(s) or personal reflections

  • What pattern of behaviour do you auto-pilot?
  • What would it be like to explore a different approach?
  • How could you use October for something different as part of a lifestyle evolution that could benefit your triathlon?
